I cry real, heart-wrenching sobs that shake my entire body. My heart aches for the baby that will now have to grow up without his mum, and every time I picture that, I cry some more. Mila rubs gentle circles on my back. “It’s just so sad,” I sob, and she nods in agreement. “Is Kain okay?”

“He’s getting on with it, but he doesn’t have a choice. The baby is allowed home tomorrow and then he’s flying solo. Of course, he’ll have the support of his brothers, and he’s going to stay at the clubhouse so that the ol’ ladies can help out. The baby will be so well looked after. Everyone is heartbroken,” says Mila.

“Should I go and see him?” I ask.

“Sweetie, he’s got enough on. He’ll call if he needs you,” she says softly, and I know she’s just trying to let me down gently. He doesn’t want to see me, and I don’t blame him.
